Based on nearly 25 years of building and marketing websites for some very large and some very small businesses, I have noticed simple, common areas where website owners and managers FAIL to achieve much, if any, success.
Online sellers, local businesses and bloggers all struggle with achieving Website Success.
It’s not their fault. They do the best with what they have. They watch YouTube videos. They read blogs. They spend time on trial and error. (Sometimes they just walk away from their sites.)
NONE of their dedicated efforts allows them to do what they do best.
It keeps them from enjoying why they got into their business in the first place.
It forces them to spend time on things they have little interest or experience in, rather than working on their business or taking time off as a reward for all their hard work and effort.
The good news is that it’s pretty easy to BECOME an experienced and talented website owner or manager in a matter of days IF you know what to do.
Here’s How I Know – The Three Things
I’ve Learned That Are Critical To Website Success
My company has built, managed or marketed hundreds of websites since 1996. We’ve built sites for small businesses and Fortune 500 companies alike. Some sites supported local brick and mortar locations while some were global. Websites for solopreneurs, entrepreneurs and corporations.
A friend of mine from my days in radio, once made a very prolific statement. He said, “The internet is gonna be like radio was 70 years ago. It’s gonna change.” Boy was her right! And it continues.
For the past 20 years I’ve always told my clients that there are TWO Keys to Website Success.
#1: An offer that converts.
It stands to reason, right? If you’re not offering something somebody needs, at the time they need it, there will be no transaction. Many website owners and managers lack the copywriting skills to write an offer that converts. Copywriting is a skill and good copywriters are paid handsomely because they generate RESULTS.
But it’s not just copywriting, it’s CONTENT. More and more people want or prefer video content! As I said above, the Internet continues to evolve.
There are other formats for content too. There is a difference between blog content and sales page content. People are in different stages of the buying process.
It doesn’t take a seasoned copywriter to create offers that convert, but most people would benefit from learning the essentials.
#2: Getting qualified leads to those offers.
Once you have an offer that converts, you need to expose your offer(s) to qualified prospects. There are two primary ways of getting ‘traffic’ to your site and your offers: Organic (free) traffic or paid advertising. Both require an investment of time and/or money.
They key is to get an acceptable Return On Investment on your investment of time and money.
The Holy Trinity of Website Success
After years of telling people about the two keys above, I realized that there is a third Key to Website Success, and without it you cannot really have an offer that converts or traffic to that offer. You may improve your results, you may be more competitive, but you WILL NOT REACH YOUR POTENTIAL!
#3: Having a complete idea of who your prospective buyers are!
Madison Avenue has been creating buyer TARGET PERSONAS or CLIENT PROFILES for years. They can be quite long and detailed, but they are critical, especially when magazine or TV advertising is used to promote an brand, product of service.
For those of us with more modest resources, Target Personas are equally as important, whether we operate a gift shop or hotel, manufacture widgets, sell eye exams or insurance, are passionate bloggers or run a non-profit organization or sell Elvis bobble-head dolls online.
All the above! B2C or B2B.
We need to research and understand who our Target Personas are, what they want or need, how educated they are about the solution, where they hang out and more!
Without accurately defining your Target Personas, you…
